News from Somerset Road Safety Partnership Motorcycle Forum
Somerset PTW Casualty Data Jan-Jun 2008
CVAM regularly attend meetings of the Somerset Road Safety Partnership. Their statistics for the first half of 2008 have just been released and they don't make good reading. The statistics cover the whole of the county of Somerset but do not include North Somerset or Bath & North East Somerset.
- PTW riders account for 9 out of 20 total fatal casualties.
- 2 out of the 9 involved no other vehicle.
- None involve low powered machines (less that 125cc).
- 125cc -1, 250cc - 1, 600cc - 2, 650cc - 2, 750cc - 2, 1200cc - 1.
- Rider error has been recorded as responsible for 7 out of the 9 fatalities.
- The figures for the 1st half of the year are up on the 1st half of previous years.
- 2005 - 2, 2006 - 3, 2007 - 3.
- Total crashes involving PTW's are lower than previous 4 years, but the trend is from slight casualties to killed or serious injury.(KSI).
1st Jan 2007 to 31st Oct 2007 KSI - 63 ( fatal 7 )
1st Jan 2008 to 31st Oct 2008 KSI - 62 ( fatal 11 )
Shared Use of Advanced Stop Lines
Somerset are considering a trial of the shared use of Advanced Stop Lines for PTW's probably in the Taunton area.
Non Slip Manhole Covers
Somerset are keen to encourage the Utility Companies to consider replacing metal service covers with the new covers with non-slip surface. They will concentrate on locations of particular danger to PTW riders on the roads that have been identified as high risk to PTW riders by reference to crash and casualty statistics.
The routes within the CVAM catchment area include the A38 from Bridgwater to North Somerset boundary, A37 from B&NES to Devon, B3151 Yeovil - Street, A39 Glastonbury - Wells, the urban area of Bridgwater and the local area of Cheddar.
