A few rider safety related tips to get you started....more in Roadcraft (above)

There’s a lucky thing...
There are 2 types of rider
  • Those who regard the road as clear, unless they can see an obstruction... and
  • Those who regard the road as obstructed or likely to be obstructed unless they KNOW it’s clear.

If you are the latter type you are, or will become, a skilful rider. If you are of the former type, you must have been born lucky...

Two Second Rule
"Only a fool forgets the 2 Second Rule" - Allow at least a 2 Second Gap between you and the vehicle in front to give you the minimum safe braking distance between you and that vehicle. To check this:
  • Pick a static marker on the side of the road. (signposts, streetlights, bridge parapet etc etc)
  • When the vehicle in front passes the marker, start counting "one-one thousand, two-one thousand, three-one thousand..." until your front wheel passes your chosen marker.
If you have passed the marker before you reach the start of 3000 then you are inside the 2 Second Gap.

Double to 4 seconds in the wet!

OVERTAKING
Approximately 1 in 5 motorcycle accidents involve overtaking.
Almost 1 in 3 of motorcycle overtaking accidents involved motorcyclists passing stationary or slow moving vehicles (e.g. in traffic queues) where the most common accident type was another vehicle turning right (either into or out of a side road or private drive) or U turning across the motorcyclists path.
In other overtaking accidents the commonest accident type is when the overtaken vehicle turned right as the motorcyclist was overtaking.
  TIPS:
  • Be as visible as possible to other drivers.
  • Anticipate that other drivers may not have seen you and be prepared for their actions.
  • Do not overtake near side roads or where cars may emerge from private drives/accesses; or do so with caution.
  • Be aware of oncoming vehicles which may turn right across your path.

CORNERS & BENDS
About 1 in 4 of motorcycle accidents occur on bends. TIPS

  • Ensure speed is appropriate to negotiate bend without losing control (better to go in too slow rather than too quick!;-), taking account of road surface condition.
  • Anticipate hazards which may be concealed by the bend and be able to stop in time to avoid them

TARGET FIXATION
Avoid 'target fixation', don't stare at/concentrate too much on any one thing ahead because you are sure to hit it. Where there is a drain cover or other road defect, look past the defect and not at it. Generally speaking you will go where you look and that includes the car pulling out on you! LOOK WHERE YOU WANT TO GO!!

RIDING WITH OTHERS - Don`t exceed your abilities - make your own judgments and assessments about the road ahead!!
