Cheddar Valley Advanced Motorcyclists (CVAM) - What We're About

There is a lot more to being a member of a local IAM group than you might expect. Whilst you can join simply to take advantage of the Skill For Life advanced rider training there's also a busy calendar of motorcycle related events and social activities:

Riding Assessments ~ Observed Rides ~ Group Rides ~ Club Events ~ Weekends Away

Trips Abroad ~ Track days ~ IAM Tests ~ Great Company >>> ADVANCE YOURSELF!

Who We Are
Cheddar Valley Advanced Motorcyclists (CVAM) are one of the many IAM advanced rider groups around the UK. We want to continually improve our riding skills, enjoy riding to the full whilst making safe progress and socialising with similarly minded riders.

CVAM members and indeed IAM members literally come from all walks of life…a diverse and often interesting group of people! CVAM is affiliated to the Institute of Advanced Motorists and is based in Cheddar, Somerset although our 120+ members come from a wide surrounding area, Bristol to Bridgwater, Weston to Wells and beyond. We are all members of the IAM having passed the IAM Advanced Bike test or are Associate members undergoing training to achieve that goal. We currently have 37 Associate members working towards completing the IAM accreditation. We look forward to meeting you!

Who is Advanced Rider training For?
Quick and easy answer - everyone with a full Uk motorcycle licence and a motorcycle. Your level of experience, the bike you ride, the time you've been riding, your age/sex, all don't matter.

Motorcyclists represent 1% of road miles covered...
but 25% of those killed or seriously injured!

Training

For Associates joining us to progress to taking the IAM Advanced Motorcycle Test we have a team of qualified Observers keen to pass on their knowledge of Advanced Riding. An Observer is allocated to each new Associate and Observed rides are arranged at the convenience of the Associate and his or her Observer. As many observed rides will take place as necessary until the Associate has progressed to the Test standard. This usually takes between 6 and 12 rides depending on experience, aptitude etc. but it doesn’t cost anything over and above the joining fee as the Observers are all volunteers. We do suggest however that a contribution to the Observers petrol and running costs should be offered at up to £10 for each ride.

Observed Rides usually last for about an hour (but can be longer at the Observer's/Associate's convenience) after which a full discussion and debrief takes place. Total time will therefore usually be about two hours. We also organise Theory sessions throughout the year covering the principles of Advanced Riding techniques which are all based on the Police Roadcraft System of Motorcycle Control.

How does CVAM operate?
Our Club nights are on the second Monday of each month and are held at the Bath Arms, Cheddar. (On the A371 just by the Village Cross). We start at 7.30 pm. and we have a variety of events including films, guest speakers, quizzes etc. and plenty of chance to chat about bikes, routes, riding and all the other topics that bikers chat about when they get together. All are welcome including guests and prospective members, so if you want to come along and see if we fit the bill as far as your biking needs are concerned, just turn up and introduce yourself to a committee member. You will be made very welcome.

Ride outs are held on the first Sunday of each month and the third Wednesday evening of each month during the summer. Rides usually begin at Churchill. For start times see the Programme of events. All members and Associates are welcome to join the rides and guests can come along subject to the ride leaders approval (please contact a Committee member beforehand if you would like to join a ride as a guest). We operate a "Drop Off" system when riding in a group which prevents anyone getting lost and means that all riders can ride at a pace they are comfortable with. We also organise trips to Bike shows, museums and race meetings and have a regular Go Karting evenings but we can do whatever the members want us to arrange, which recently has included a track day. For a full view of the current programme of events go to the Programme Page.
